What is HSCL all about?

.

Hello everyone!

My name is Johanne and I Home School Community Liaison Co-ordinator (HSCL) for Belmayne ETNS. This is my second year working in this role and I am delighted to be working with such a fantastic group of parents and staff whom I have worked with as class teacher and as part of the support team for the last six years. My job as the HSCL Co-ordinator is to build links between the home, school and community. I am on hand to give parents advice where possible and to listen to parents when school related problems arise.

What is H.S.C.L. about?
• H.S.C.L. is about bringing parents closer to their children’s education

• Providing a link between home and school by visiting homes and bringing information about school related or community events .

• Offering parents opportunities to take part in a range of self-development courses    and activities

• Offering parents opportunities to take part in learning initiatives in the classroom where the opportunity arises

What does the role of H.S.C.L.Co-ordinator involve?
Ø  A big part of my job is to visit parents in their homes. I try to call on as many families as possible at least once during their time at the school to say “Hello” and introduce myself.

Ø  Another large part of my job is to arrange courses, classes and events for parents. The classes are designed to fit a whole range of interests and needs of parents. Classes that have been arranged in the past include: Zumba, Yoga, Flower Arranging, Numeracy and English Language Classes.

Ø  It is also up to the H.S.C.L. Co-ordinator to organise initiatives where parents get the opportunity to work with the teacher and children in the classroom such as Maths for Fun and Shared Reading/Literacy Programmes. This is a hugely beneficial and enjoyable experience for all concerned.

What does the H.S.C.L not do?
It is not my job to report back personal details of a family to the school staff. Anything that a parent says to me is treated with the utmost confidentiality. I will only divulge information about a family at the request of that family or that which raises concern for a child’s safety
